Turkmenistan – “Door to Hell”

Turkmenistan – “Door to Hell”

How much do we want to go here? A lot.

It’s a cavernous, flaming pit outside the small town of Darvaza which has been continuously burning for more than 35 years.

According local residents, geologists were digging in the area for gas deposits and stumbled upon a huge underground cavern. The geologists decided the cavern was filled with poisonous gas, and decided that they should burn off the excess. It’s been on fire for years and years!

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan

As cities go, this is an odd one. The country itself is pretty mental, mainly due to their crackers rulers… Ashgabat is in between a desert and a mountain range in Central Asia and has a population of about a million people.

This million poeple have a statue of their president made of pure gold, it rotates to face the sun during daylight! He also renamed January after his own name, and he changed the rest of the months names too.

It’s crackers, and surely that is a good enough reason to visit! He has renamed towns after his mother, and you are required to recite his poetry if you are taking a driving test… Ummm….

Anyone with a tourist visa is required to hire a guide, which kind of sucks if you want to go and explore truly independently, but don’t let this put you off. If you get a decent guide then they will help you have a pretty spectacular time in this crazy city, and the people are so welcoming and friendly.

Here is a pretty fascinating article about Turkmenistan, talks about the Stalinist slant and loads more…

Kazakhstan, Charyn Canyon – What a Place To Start With!…

Kazakhstan – What a Place To Start With!…

Borat made Kazakhstan the laughing stock of Europe, but what a stunning country it is! Quite an untouched vibe to the place too, perfect for the traveller who is tired of getting drunk in Thailand and wants to explore somewhere a bit more adventurous…

Try Charyn Canyon, stunning desert weirdness and not a foreigner around! Well, there are a few now as it becomes more moderate, and it’s totally worth it. The place has a heavy Russian influence (they make up over 40% of the population), and Russian influenced political system, with stunning scenery and fun locals.
